Participants will study theories of language acquisition, pedagogies to harness and strengthen learners’ cultural and linguistic capital, and instructional methods, and curriculum design. In particular, the symposium will focus on:
Writing projects and curriculum that develop community knowledge
Practical and affirming supports for multilingual writers, that promote agency
Learning alliances inside and outside the classroom
Joyful vocabulary acquisition and classroom pedagogies to deepen students’ oral language and academic vocabulary
Creating communities of care and belonging, especially for newcomers
Incorporating multimodal texts and multiliteracies pedagogy to increase engagement and access to critical literacies
